Thanksgiving and The One Thing I Learned from “Grey’s Anatomy”

Belize Gang

I’ve already mentioned our penchant for crappy TV shows.  You can add early seasons of Grey’s Anatomy to the list.  The only thing I remember about the show was something Meredith said:  “Family is what you start out with until you can find your own tribe”.  I was struck by that and think about it every day.

I left Hawaii and my family days after my 18th birthday and never moved back.  I’ve lived the next 22 in California.  It’s my home now.  Sometimes, however, we think of moving somewhere else, just to expose the boys to regional and cultural differences around the country or even abroad.  Discussing this one day, one of our great friends gave me another Meredith-like quote.  Remembering how he went from our home town of Kalihi, HI to Seattle, WA and finally settling down in Santa Clara, CA, Rando said, “The more places I’ve lived, the more places I can call home.”  Then I mentioned how we’d like to provide the boys with an interesting and less than traditional, if a bit weird, childhood.  Sue, probably our family’s greatest friend and next door neighbor, responded: “Isn’t that what we’re here for?”

Yes, yes indeed.  That is why all of you are in our lives.  You make us interesting, less than traditional and totally weird. Being thousands of miles away from my family, we’ve built our own tribe.  And while we’ve done that quite literally, we’ve also been very lucky to surround ourselves and, by extension, our children with some of the coolest people in the world.

To our tribe, thank you so much for being as amazing as you are.  You make our lives richer for knowing you and more importantly, make the boys’ lives less than traditional, if a bit weird. Okay, totally weird. But we love you anyway.

Hi T – I stopped watching GA when it seemed the only consistent plot theme was “Meredith is going to date everyone on the show.” 😉
